How to Reduce Missing Songs When Transferring Playlists Between Music Services
Moving a playlist from one music service to another may produce fewer tracks than expected. Some songs can disappear completely, while others may be replaced by a live performance, remaster, remix, instrumental version, or recording from a different album.
This does not always mean the transfer failed. A transfer service usually rebuilds the playlist by searching the destination catalog for recordings that resemble those in the source list. The result depends on catalog availability, track metadata, platform restrictions and the quality of each match.
A careful transfer process cannot guarantee that every song will survive, but it can greatly reduce missing tracks and make recovery easier.

A Playlist Transfer Rebuilds the List Instead of Moving the Original Tracks
A playlist contains references to recordings stored by a particular music service. Those references cannot simply be copied into another platform because Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, TIDAL and other services maintain their own catalog entries.
The transfer tool reads information from the source track and searches for a suitable result on the destination service. The title and artist are usually important, but album information, featured artists, track duration and recording identifiers may also contribute to the match.
Small metadata differences can interfere with this process. One platform may list a track as “Song Title,” while another adds “Remastered 2024,” “Radio Edit” or the name of a featured performer. Punctuation, translated artist names and different album editions can also prevent an automatic match.
Soundiiz states that its matching process may leave a track unfound when spelling, punctuation or featured-artist information differs. Its system can use strict matching to avoid adding an incorrect recording, meaning a song may be available on the destination platform even though the tool did not select it automatically.
Catalog differences create another limitation. A recording available through one service may be absent from another because the services do not carry exactly the same releases. Availability can also vary across countries and regions.
Prepare a Reliable Record of the Source Playlist
Create a separate record of the playlist while every source track is still accessible. A CSV export is useful when the service or transfer tool provides one. A spreadsheet or plain text document is also sufficient for a smaller playlist.
The backup should include the track title, primary artist and album. Add the duration or release version for recordings that could easily be confused with another edition. This is especially useful for classical music, DJ mixes, soundtracks, live albums and songs with several remasters.
Record the original number of tracks as well. Comparing that number with the destination playlist immediately reveals whether anything was omitted.
Duplicate entries deserve attention because destination services do not always handle them in the same way. SoundCloud, for example, may prevent repeated copies of the same track from appearing in one playlist. A transfer can therefore contain fewer entries even when no unique song was lost.
Removing accidental duplicates makes the final count easier to interpret. Deliberate duplicates can remain, but note that the destination platform may keep only one copy.
Large playlists may also encounter platform-specific limits. Dividing an unusually long playlist into smaller sections can make failures easier to identify and reduce the amount of work required when a transfer must be repeated.

Run a Small Transfer Before Moving the Full Library
A test playlist can reveal problems without putting the complete library through the same process.
Create a sample containing approximately 20 to 50 tracks. Include ordinary studio recordings as well as several difficult examples, such as a live track, remix, remaster, regional release, song with featured artists and recording from an independent musician.
Move this sample through the selected transfer service and examine the result. Pay attention to the number of successful matches, the versions added and the information provided for unsuccessful tracks.
This test also confirms that the correct accounts are connected. Users sometimes maintain more than one account with the same music service, particularly when they have signed in through email, Apple, Google or Facebook at different times. A successful transfer sent to the wrong account can appear to have disappeared.
Platform connections may also need to be refreshed when authorization expires. Resolving that issue with a small playlist is easier than discovering it during a transfer containing thousands of songs.
A poor test result does not necessarily mean another tool will recover every track. However, it indicates that the matching method or destination catalog is unsuitable for some parts of the collection.
Review Missing Tracks and Incorrect Versions Separately
Transfer reports usually separate matched and unmatched tracks, but a successful match is not always the correct recording.
Compare the new playlist with your original list and review missing songs separately from incorrect matches. For tracks that were not transferred, search the destination service using the artist name and a simplified song title. If necessary, check the artist’s albums, singles, or compilation releases, as the recording may appear under a different edition.
For songs that were matched incorrectly, compare the album, duration, and version details. A live performance, remaster, or radio edit can easily replace the intended recording. If the correct version is available, replace it manually. Some transfer tools also let you create matching rules for future transfers or export a list of unmatched tracks, making it easier to recover missing songs without reviewing the entire playlist again.
Regional Catalogs and Platform Limits Can Prevent Exact Copies
Music availability is not identical in every country. Apple states that access to media services and particular types of content can vary by country or region. Its support documentation also recognizes that songs may become unavailable or appear grayed out in a particular regional catalog.
A track found in the source account may therefore be absent from the catalog connected to the destination account. This situation cannot be solved by changing the spelling or trying several transfer tools when the recording is not licensed there.
Changing an account country solely to recover a few songs is rarely a practical solution. Music services may require the user to be physically located in the new country, update the payment method or complete changes to existing subscriptions. Regional settings should reflect the user’s actual location and account circumstances.
Technical limits can create similar symptoms. Transfer tools depend on APIs provided by music platforms, and those APIs may restrict the number or speed of requests. Some services also impose limits on playlist size or library capacity.
A completed transfer may not appear immediately in every application. Cached data and delayed synchronization can temporarily hide a playlist that already exists on the service. Refreshing the library, reopening the app or viewing the account through the web player can reveal whether the data is still syncing.
If the playlist remains incomplete after synchronization, use the transfer report and source backup rather than running the entire process repeatedly. Multiple attempts can create duplicate playlists and make the result harder to review.

Metadata Helps Most With Difficult Recordings
Metadata becomes valuable when ordinary title-and-artist searches produce several similar results.
The album name helps distinguish an original studio recording from a compilation or later release. Track duration can separate a radio edit from an extended version. Featured-artist information may reveal that two platforms format the same credit differently.
The International Standard Recording Code, or ISRC, identifies a particular sound recording. Different recordings of the same composition can have different ISRCs, making the code useful when distinguishing studio, live and remastered versions.
ISRC is not a universal consumer search method. Many streaming apps do not provide a visible field where a listener can enter the code. It is most useful when a transfer tool displays recording identifiers, supports matching rules or provides enough metadata to verify a difficult track.
Do not rely on ISRC alone for every song. A practical review normally begins with the title, artist, album and duration. Recording codes are better reserved for disputed matches and releases with several nearly identical versions.
Keep a Portable Backup for Important Playlists
A playlist stored only inside one streaming account remains dependent on that service. Tracks can later become unavailable, accounts can be closed and playlist entries can change when labels replace one release with another.
Maintain a portable record of playlists that would be difficult to recreate. A spreadsheet containing the title, artist, album and optional version information is enough for most listeners. Add ISRCs only where precise recording identity matters.
Save another copy after major playlist edits or shortly before changing services. Frequently updated playlists may benefit from scheduled synchronization, but synchronization should not replace an independent backup. An incorrect match can otherwise be copied automatically to several platforms.
Songs that are genuinely unavailable on the destination service can remain in the master list. Keeping them there preserves the intended structure of the playlist and makes it possible to search again later if the catalog changes.
The most reliable transfer is not the one that reports the highest success percentage. It is the one in which the destination playlist has been reviewed, incorrect recordings have been replaced and every unresolved song remains documented. Treating the process as a controlled rebuild rather than a one-click copy produces a cleaner playlist and prevents missing tracks from being forgotten.
